Bargain hunting in Berlin: How to save food and money!

There is a supermarket in Berlin-Friedrichshain that reduces prices to a minimum and makes the hearts of bargain hunters beat faster! This not only saves money, but also saves food from the bin. René Heiden, the committed owner, has created a concept with his shop that delights both environmentally conscious shoppers and gourmets. Instead of expensive products, there are surprise bags full of fresh food at unbeatable prices!

“The customers who come with their smartphone are often the ones who order via the Too Good To Go app,” explains Heiden. This app makes it possible to purchase leftover food from supermarkets, restaurants and bakeries at a fraction of the price. The bags often contain fruit, vegetables and even high-quality organic products that would otherwise be thrown away. A real bargain, because for just three to four euros you can get goods worth up to six euros!

Unique shopping experiences

Heiden, who was a former engineer at Lufthansa, has realized his dream of a sustainable business in 2023. His store stands out from other supermarkets: There are no long shelves here, but rather large glass containers from which customers can fill their own bottles. “We cannot throw anything away!” emphasizes Heiden. Every Saturday he makes the food that can no longer be sold available online. In 95 percent of cases, the bags sell out quickly!

The customers are thrilled! Caro, a regular shopper, is delighted with her surprise bag of whole grain bread and fresh vegetables. “I love cooking creatively and trying new things!” she says. Stefanie is also convinced: “Here you can get good food at a fair price and at the same time do something good for the environment.” With just a few clicks, customers can not only save money, but also discover new, exciting foods - a real highlight in the Berlin neighborhood!
