Würzburger Bachtage 2024: Top-class music enjoyment awaits you!
The 56th Würzburg Bach Days are approaching, a musical event that takes place from Thursday, November 21st to Sunday, December 1st and offers a varied program with some of the most important masterpieces of classical music. The musical direction has been taken over by the experienced St. Johannis cantor Hae-Kyung Jung, who has already ensured the artistic quality of previous years.
At the opening, a lecture will be held on November 21st in the Toscana Hall of the residence by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Konrad. On the violin, Sinn Yang will perform the moving pieces “O Mensch, macht Rechtigkeit” from the St. John Passion and the “Partita in D minor” by J. S. Bach.
A variety of concerts throughout the Bach Days
The musical program includes a variety of concerts that take place in various historical and cultural locations in Würzburg. On Saturday, November 23rd, at 7:00 p.m., the St. John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach will be performed in St. John's Church. An impressive cast sings under the direction of Hae-Kyung Jung, including soprano Magdalene Harer and bassist Manfred Bittner in the role of Jesus. The ensemble is accompanied by the Würzburg Bach Choir as well as teachers and students from the Würzburg and Frankfurt University of Music.
Another highlight is coming up on Tuesday, November 26th: Once again in the Great Hall of the Würzburg University of Music, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra under the direction of Gottfried von der Goltz will present works by J. S. Bach and A. Vivaldi. This evening is expected to be full of “fiery and passionate” interpretations.
On Wednesday, November 27th, the chamber choir concert with motets by J. S. Bach and Anton Bruckner will take place in the St. Johanniskirche, led by the Chamber Choir of the Würzburg University of Music. The evening promises an intimate atmosphere that gives the choral sounds space to explore the depth of these musical works.
Additional events
On Thursday, November 28th, visitors can look forward to a chamber music evening where excerpts from the “Art of Fugue” by J. S. Bach and works by Mendelssohn and Bruckner can be heard. This concert also takes place in the St. John's Church.
Another special event, the matinée for the support concert for young artists, will take place on Saturday, November 30th, at 11:00 a.m. in the Toscana Hall of the residence. Talented young musicians such as Guilherme Gomes Raminhos present themselves here on the guitar and bring a breath of fresh air into the program with works by Scarlatti, Bach and other composers.
The Bach Days will conclude with a choir concert on the same day at 7:00 p.m. in St. John's Church, in which, among other things, Gerald Finzi's "Magnificat", Leonard Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms" and Benjamin Britten's "A Ceremony of Carols" will be performed.
