A dramatic incident occurred on Saturday morning, February 22, 2025, in the community of Brandberg in the Schwaz district, Tyrol. Three ski tourers from Bavaria had decided to climb the Napfspitze in the main Zillertal ridge. But around 10 a.m. the adventure suddenly turned into a nightmare when a slab of snow came loose below the Little Spoontip. A 31-year-old athlete had no chance and was swept away by the avalanche, as the police confirmed. It was a race against time!

The other two ski tourers, who unfortunately were not swept away, acted immediately and started the rescue chain. While they waited for the emergency services, they provided first aid to their fallen friend. The injured German suffered serious head and thigh injuries and had to be flown to the hospital in Innsbruck in an emergency helicopter after rapid first aid from the Mayerhofen mountain rescue team. Fortunately, the other two remained unharmed and were taken to the valley by the police, as the ORF reported ( ORF ).

This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk in the Tyrolean mountains, especially under the conditions that have prevailed over the last few days. Such summits attract mountaineers, but with natural beauty comes risks. The injured man is now in an Innsbruck hospital while the mountain friends have to deal with the psychological trauma of the incident.
