Kitzingen starts free collection: New container for cooking oils!

Kitzingen has launched an innovative project to promote the sustainable disposal of cooking oils and fats. For over two years, citizens in Kitzingen have been able to hand in their used oils to the recycling center free of charge. In order to make this process even easier, the municipal waste management is now offering free reusable containers, which further support environmental considerations and make collection easier.

The first thousand reusable containers will be distributed to households free of charge. Every household has the opportunity to receive one of these containers. If demand is higher, additional containers can be purchased at the recycling center in the conneKT Park for a deposit of just 2.50 euros. For example, people who fry frequently and therefore have higher needs can easily use several containers. Each container comes with an information flyer that provides the most important information for correct use.

Details about the reusable containers

The new collection containers have a capacity of 1.2 liters and offer various advantages: They are leak-proof, odor-tight and can withstand temperatures up to 70 degrees Celsius. All cooking oils and fats used in the household may be collected in the containers, even if they are unsifted, including residues of breading, herbs or cheese crumbs. When the container is full, citizens can dispose of it in one of the cooking oil bins at the recycling center and receive a clean container for further collection.

Alternatively, you can use your own containers as long as they are made of plastic or metal. However, recycling also plays a crucial role in collection at the recycling center. The collected cooking oils and fats are picked up, cleaned and processed by the regional recycling company “Every Drop Counts GmbH” in order to produce climate-friendly biofuels as well as electricity and heat. Some of these processed oils are also used to make cleaning products and cosmetic products.

Separate collection of oils not only benefits the environment, but also prevents costly problems in wastewater systems. Cooking oils can clog pipes and disrupt the purification process in plants, which is why correct disposal is essential.

What can go in the reusable containers?

The following substances may be collected in the new containers:

  • Gebrauchte Frittier- und Bratfette sowie Speiseöle aller Art
  • Öl von eingelegten Speisen (wie z.B. Sardinen, Schafskäse, Peperoni)
  • Margarine
  • Verdorbene und abgelaufene Speiseöle und -fette

However, it is important not to put certain materials in the containers, including:

  • Mineral-, Motor- und Schmieröle
  • Mayonnaisen, Salatsaucen und Dressings
  • Speisereste und sonstige Abfälle
  • Andere Flüssigkeiten und Chemikalien

If you have any questions about the collection of cooking oil and fat, the district office's waste advisors are available on 09321 928-1234 or by email at abfall@kitzingen.de. This project can be seen as a further step towards a sustainable future that not only protects the environment, but also offers citizens a simple and effective way to dispose of their cooking oils and fats.
