A brilliant success for the Joseph von Eichendorff School! On November 7th, the team led by Rector Andrea Pöchmann was awarded the Bavarian Dementia Prize in Regensburg. She accepted the honor together with committed teachers and specialists from the St. Martin retirement home. This award recognizes the school's outstanding work in the area of dementia awareness and is a sign of respect for people with dementia.

Festive awards and moving actions

After the award ceremony, the school community celebrated in the auditorium the following Friday. In her speech, Pöchmann emphasized the importance of the certificate from the Bavarian State Ministry for Health, Care and Prevention. “We want to integrate sick people more into social life,” she explained. Since September 2023, the students have been intensively dealing with the topic of dementia. The highlight was a “dementia week” in which the children experienced everyday situations from the perspective of those affected. Activities such as board games with seniors and a concert by the 4th grade ensured touching encounters.

A strong signal for society

“The students engage with great empathy and gain valuable experiences for their lives,” says Pöchmann. Politicians such as MdL Petra Loibl and Mayor Josef Beham also praised the project and emphasized the importance of connecting young and old. In Bavaria, around 270,000 people currently live with dementia, and the Joseph von Eichendorff School is making a valuable contribution to raising awareness and integrating these people with “MeetDementia”. A strong sign for an inclusive society!
