Ellwangen is fighting for emergency practice: the local council sees an urgent need for action!

The city of Ellwangen is on everyone’s lips! The local council is doing everything it can to defend itself against the threatened closure of the emergency practice of the Baden-Württemberg Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KVBW). In a gripping meeting on Thursday evening in the town hall, a resolution was unanimously passed that is addressed directly to the Ministry of Social Affairs and the district council. Here, as SPD city councilor Ariane Bergerhoff emphasizes, the city representatives are calling for the emergency practice to be maintained and for a return to the previous opening hours, which were in effect until the end of October 2023. The health of the people in Ellwangen and the surrounding area is at stake!

The urgency of this demand is alarming! Ellwangen needs an emergency medical practice – that’s what the resolution says. It is made clear: Medical care must be fully guaranteed on site. An appeal to the Baden-Württemberg Health Minister Manfred Lucha warns that the KVBW must fulfill its legal mandate and reverse the threatened closure. The city leaders are certain: well-functioning emergency care is non-negotiable!

Shocking planned closures

The background? A massive reform of the KVBW wants to close 17 emergency practices in the country, including the one in Ellwangen. The city councilors warn that the closure would dramatically worsen outpatient medical care in the entire Ostalb district. The Ellwanger emergency practice is currently only open on weekends and public holidays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. - already inadequate care!

Another dramatic aspect: The closure will significantly increase the pressure on the emergency practices in Aalen and Schwäbisch Gmünd as well as on the local hospitals and emergency services. “We fear for the quality of life of our citizens,” explains a stunned local council representative. It can look good for Ellwangen - but only if the district council rethinks its decisions. The Sankt Anna Virngrund Clinic is needed around the clock to provide reliable basic medical care!
