50 years of pregnancy advice: SkF Ingolstadt looks back proudly!

Ingolstadt on everyone’s lips! The Social Service for Catholic Women (SkF) is celebrating half a century of pregnancy counseling and thus represents an indispensable support for expectant mothers in hopeless situations. It all started in the 1970s when the Federal Ministry for Family and Youth was looking for suitable providers to support pregnant women in need. “The experience and expertise of the SkF were of course worth their weight in gold,” says department manager Nicole Drexl. A model project in Munich was seamlessly taken over by Ingolstadt in 1974, which is why the advice center is now considered one of the first flagships of social support.

Numerous offers that go beyond pure advice have been introduced over the years. From the “baby basket” for the first baby clothes to family midwives who offer home visits – the SkF knows what it takes! The online information evening, which is still very well received, was particularly successful during the Corona pandemic. Every year, between 800 and 1,000 people seeking advice from around 50 nations come to the advice center and can receive advice in several languages. “We strengthen families and help them take responsibility,” emphasizes Drexl, while pointing out the comprehensive support – both financial and psychosocial.

Financial challenges

In the charming Ingolstadt advice center there is a constant change in progress, but with a worry in its pocket! The diocese of Eichstätt provides an impressive 98 percent of the financing, but the space for reserves is becoming small. “Long-term financial security is not guaranteed,” warns Drexl and points out the dependence on donations. The SkF looks back on 50 years with a proud heart, while uncertainty hovers in the air: “Expectant parents and families must not be left alone.”
