False driver's license and illegal license plates discovered on the highway!

On Sunday evening, December 15, 2024, at around 8:30 p.m., the motorway police checked a 32-year-old Slovakian on the S10 in the municipality of Neumarkt im Mühlkreis (Freistadt district, Upper Austria). This check revealed an explosive situation: not only did the man have a fake driver's license, but the vehicle was also not registered and the license plates mounted did not even belong to this car. The police seized both the driver's license and the license plates and temporarily arrested all three occupants, including a 39-year-old Slovakian and a 25-year-old Hungarian. After the interviews, the two Slovakians were released, while the Hungarian was taken to the Wels police detention center on the basis of an existing arrest warrant, reports 5min.at.

The controversies surrounding license plates continue, especially since Slovakian license plates have received a new design since January 1, 2023. In the current version they are white with black writing and, in addition to the Slovakian coat of arms, contain an individual code consisting of letters and numbers. The first letter no longer indicates a specific district since the 2023 reform, which is a significant change from the previous system. This redesign is intended to make potential license plate misuse more difficult and ensure the identification of vehicles, as kfz.net reports. Keeping license plates intact is crucial not only for road safety, but also for legal compliance, which makes recent events all the more telling.
