Red alert: 50,000 Russians threaten to launch an offensive against Sumy!
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has conveyed alarming news from the Sumy region. According to vol.at, around 50,000 Russian soldiers are currently stationed there and are preparing for an offensive. In response, Kiev is taking measures to prevent a large-scale Russian offensive.
Zelensky further informs that the strongest Russian forces are concentrated on the Kursk Front. In recent days, Ukrainian forces have been able to push back Russian troops in the region by four kilometers. Nevertheless, Russia has already captured at least four border villages and is advancing in eastern Ukraine, particularly near Kostiantynivka.
Geopolitical tensions and military strategy
The situation is coming to a head as Zelensky warns that Russia is planning to cross the administrative border into the Dnipro region, but has so far failed. Russian Defense Minister Andrei Beloussov explains that troops are advancing on almost all sectors of the front. In a diversionary political rhetoric, Beloussov accuses NATO of using the Ukraine war to expand its presence in Eastern Europe.
In addition, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has indicated further negotiations with Ukraine. The long-term goal here would be for Ukraine to accept the status of a neutral country. As military conflicts increase, Zelensky plans to take part in the next G7 summit and probably also in the EU summit.
Armament issues and European support
Against the backdrop of this threatening military situation, Omid Nouripour, a leading Green Party politician in Germany, is calling on the federal government to take a clear stance on the Taurus cruise missiles. In an interview with the TV channel Phoenix, he criticized the SPD for its indecisive stance on the delivery of these weapon systems, which could be of utmost importance for Ukraine. Nouripour notes that now is the time to take action before more time is lost.
In this context, [tagesschau.de](https://www.tagesschau.de/ausland/europa/ukraine- Defense-merz-reichbreite- Waffen-100.html) reveals that Chancellor Friedrich Merz plans to lift the range restrictions for arms deliveries to Ukraine. This decision could affect the MARS rocket launcher system with a range of 85 kilometers. Merz emphasizes that this decision was made several months ago and it is now more urgent than ever to increase support for Ukraine.
However, military experts warn of possible problems. Military expert Franz-Stefan Gady says that although Russia is making costly advances into Ukraine, it is currently unable to carry out a large-scale offensive. The lack of infantry remains a key difficulty for Ukraine, although stockpiles of ammunition and other military capabilities appear sufficient to prevent a Russian operational breakthrough.
The development of the conflict was shaped by Russia's strategy to bleed the Ukrainian armed forces dry, particularly in terms of air defense. However, Ukrainian air defense is currently still competitive. How long this situation lasts depends on the ability of the Ukrainian front to hold out until the Russian forces are exhausted.
