Wismar on the move: A new center is being built on Schweriner Straße!
The Hanseatic city of Wismar is currently a scene of exciting developments. On March 1, 2024, the transformation of the former “Hevag site” on Schweriner Straße was in full swing. Originally known as a contaminated “problem area”, this is now on the way to becoming an attractive “fillet” with the new “Drewespark”. Local suppliers, service providers, shops and restaurants are expected to open here by summer 2024 on an area of 14,000 square meters wismar.fm reported. But progress has lagged behind schedule, causing concern.
Tragic loss and important actions
On March 5, 2024, the news of the sudden death of the CEO of Sparkasse Mecklenburg-Nordwest, Manuel Krastel, shocked the public. He died unexpectedly shortly after his 60th birthday and leaves a gap that will be felt after more than 30 years of involvement in various functions at the Sparkasse. However, such tragic events would not be the only concern among citizens in Wismar. On March 26th there was a massive power outage that paralyzed almost the entire city. The causes were disruptions in the upstream 110 kV network of E.DIS Netz GmbH, which also affected large parts of northwest Mecklenburg. Fortunately, the power supply in Wismar was restored within about 15 minutes, as wismar.fm also reported.
Amid these challenges, cultural life in Wismar remains active. The 21st Wismar Hering Days took place on March 9th, organized by the Hanseatic Chefs Club Wismarbucht, a popular event for the locals. The city also invited people to take part in the global “Earth Hour” on March 23rd to set an example for climate protection. Cultural exchange is also recognized: Culture Minister Bettina Martin emphasized the importance of school newspapers that promote communication and tolerance among younger generations, while at the same time honoring the winners of the 2024 school newspaper competition. All of this creates a vibrant image of Wismar, despite the recent challenges.
The archaeological discoveries at the Poeler Tor, which shed light on 500 years of Reformation and citizenship in Wismar, also show how complex the history of this city is. Wismar thus combines not only current challenges, but also a rich history that is constantly creating new space for discoveries and cultural education, as suggested in the Wismar contributions zeitreise-wismar.de.
