Vienna in transition: Who will take over after the elections?

Vienna's finance director Christoph Maschek is in the spotlight as he is set to be appointed infrastructure minister following Peter Hanke's move to the federal cabinet as city councilor for finance and economics. According to information confirmed by the office of Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ), Maschek is expected to take over the department, but it is widely believed that he will only remain in office on an interim basis until a new city government is formed after the Vienna elections on April 27.

Temporary appointment and swearing-in

Official confirmation of this appointment is still pending, but it is of great importance for the upcoming political changes in Vienna. Maschek's inauguration could take place as early as next week at a specially called local council meeting. However, no invitation date for this meeting has yet been announced, which underlines the urgency of the decision.

With Hanke's move, it becomes clear that there is currently a lot going on in Vienna's city politics. The NEOS have already announced the successor to the outgoing education councilor Christoph Wiederkehr, which further sheds light on the developments in the town hall. These restructurings increase the pressure on the parties to optimally position their candidates for the coming elections, as Viennese citizens will soon be casting their votes.
