Freezing rain and the risk of slippery roads: This is how dangerous a winter day in MV is!

On January 6, 2025, a severe weather warning was issued for the Western Pomerania-Rügen region. The German Weather Service (DWD) warned of black ice caused by freezing rain. The official weather warning applied to the Vorpommern-Rügen district - inland and announced a warning period from 00:02 a.m. to 04:00 a.m. An increased risk of slippery roads due to freezing rain was assumed, which could lead to potential risks in road traffic.

In the DWD's recommendations for action, citizens were asked to avoid spending time outdoors and traveling and to adapt their behavior in traffic. It was recommended to plan for delays and hindrances. The warning level for these meteorological conditions has been classified as a significant weather warning (orange). The DWD distinguishes between four warning levels: yellow, orange, red and dark red.

Current weather in Western Pomerania-Rügen

Regarding the current weather in the Vorpommern-Rügen - Inland district, snowfall was reported in the morning, with the temperature at -1°C and the humidity at 96%. The felt temperature was -7°C and the wind was blowing at a speed of 30 km/h. The UV index was 0.

The hourly weather data shows a consistent rainfall of 100% in the early hours of the morning, with temperatures falling to -1°C and rising to 5°C around 10:00 a.m. Wind speeds ranged between 18 km/h and 33 km/h in the different time intervals.

In addition, the DWD also warned nationwide about the risk of slippery roads and sidewalks in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in a report on January 5, 2025. Snow and rain were forecast for the afternoon, with the possibility that this precipitation could turn into dangerous freezing rain. The onset of winter has already led to slippery traffic accidents in the region.

It was pointed out that the ground is still partially frozen, which could result in the formation of lightning ice on roads and paths. The ADAC recommended not using the vehicle if there were warnings of lightning ice or freezing rain and postponing the start date. In the event of unexpected lightning ice, you should take a break until the gritting service arrives. In addition, the situation on winter roads requires greater foresight and caution, including keeping a greater distance from other vehicles, braking gently and avoiding hectic steering movements.

The weather is expected to calm down on Monday night and milder temperatures of around ten degrees are expected at the start of the week.
