ÖBB celebrates progress: More women in management positions!
On International Women's Day, ÖBB draws a positive conclusion: the proportion of women in the company is continuously increasing, while the number of male employees is stagnating. The 17 percent proportion of women as the target for 2026 has already been exceeded; Every fifth management position is now held by women. In Carinthia, the proportion of women in ÖBB jobs increased from 6.9 percent in 2014 to almost 13 percent klick-kaernten.at reported. Particularly noteworthy is the increase in the number of women in traditional railway professions: the proportion of train attendants is almost a third, and there are also significant increases among train drivers and bus drivers.
The proportion of women in management positions is not only an important issue at ÖBB. Since the introduction of women's quotas in 2015, Germany has experienced an increase in the proportion of women in leadership positions. Where in 2014 only 5.4 percent of board positions in DAX companies were held by women, the figure is now 14.7 percent uni-paderborn.de reported. The binding regulation stipulates a female quota of at least 30 percent for supervisory boards in order to promote equality in management positions.
Diversity in companies
ÖBB relies on flexible working hours and family-friendly conditions to integrate women into the workforce and make their careers easier. By 2030, 4,100 new employees are to be hired every year, including around 210 women in Carinthia. Manuela Waldner, CFO of ÖBB, emphasizes: “Promoting women’s careers is a central goal.” At the same time, there are programs such as cross-mentoring and a 50 percent female quota in special programs to actively support female talent.
In order to inspire women to pursue technical careers, ÖBB works closely with universities and the AMS. Events such as Girls’ Day and the SHEgoesDIGITAL project offer valuable insights into the working world of the railway. The ÖBB aims to promote equal opportunities in an increasingly diversified job profile and thus create the basis for a sustainable corporate structure.
