Therme Bad Vilbel: Mega project is finally taking shape!
In Bad Vilbel, in the Rhine-Main area, the large thermal spa project is taking concrete shape. After approval by the main and finance committee, the development of the thermal baths is facing a turning point. Project manager Frank Müller announced: “The thermal baths are coming!” With an investment of 400 million euros, the thermal baths, which are expected to go into operation in 2028, are expected to bring lasting change to the region. The investors expect the building permit to begin construction of the integrated indoor swimming pool as early as spring 2025, which will offer a 25-meter pool, a teaching pool and a children's pool as well as space for club and school sports Frankfurter Neue Presse reported.
Cost explosion and skepticism
While the committee spoke out in favor of the mega-project, the Greens remain skeptical. They warn of the city's high investments of 85 million euros, which cover over 20 percent of the financial risk without having any influence on the implementation of the project. Those too daily news quoted that the construction costs were doubled from the original 200 to 400 million euros. The decision on the sale of the property is therefore scheduled for December 17th, although the city now has to discuss the planning further.
So far, the answers to citizens' pressing questions have remained unclear. The construction of the indoor swimming pool should be completed first, forecast for 2026, while the entire thermal baths will require longer construction times. Even if approval for access to the construction site has already been granted, many aspects such as the specific construction time and the use of the necessary resources remain open. So it remains to be seen whether the coveted thermal baths will soon become a reality or whether there will be further delays.
