Rescue for Wismar: billion-dollar contract for submarines is imminent!

Berlin/Wismar.A billion-dollar contract for the construction of submarines could save the ailing shipyard in Wismar! The Bundestag's Budget and Defense Committee plans to decide on a contract worth an incredible 4.7 billion euros on Wednesday (December 4th). This information comes from Berlin coalition circles and promises an exciting turnaround for the shipyard.

The order will go to Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), which took over the shipyard after the MV shipyards went bankrupt. The plan is to build four submarines for Germany and two for Norway. TKMS has locations in Kiel and Wismar, and the anticipation for this deal is palpable!

Urgency for the shipyard employees

In addition, the federal government will provide another billion euros to convert the shipyard for submarine production. However, this deal must be completed by the end of the year to avoid layoffs of the remaining employees in the employing company. The clock is ticking!

The German-Norwegian submarine project could bring even more orders to Wismar and Kiel in the long term. Norway plans to build five frigates for a total of 15 billion euros and is considering Germany as a preferred partner. Johannes Arlt, SPD member of the Bundestag, emphasizes: “The decision expected on Wednesday will ensure that we can strengthen our cooperation with Norway and maintain jobs in Wismar.”

The submarines are manufactured in Germany, while Norway is responsible for repairs and torpedo production. TKMS, with over 8,000 employees, has recorded positive sales development in recent years, which further strengthens the hope for a secure future for the shipyard in Wismar.
