Passenger numbers are increasing: Vienna Airport shines in the first quarter of 2025!

Vienna Airport recorded a 1.8% increase in passenger numbers in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the previous year. A total of 6,018,204 passengers were registered at the airport during this period, which represents a positive development for Austria's most important traffic hub. There was also an increase in freight volume: This increased by 7.7% to 73,280 tons, which continues to position the airport as a central player in international freight traffic.

Passenger numbers for the entire Flughafen Wien group, which includes Vienna Airport as well as Malta Airport and Košice Airport, rose by 4.6% to 7,929,294 travelers. These developments underscore the aviation industry's ongoing recovery after the difficult years of the pandemic. In March 2025 in particular, there was an increase in passenger volume of 4.1% to 2,993,138 passengers in the entire group and by 0.9% to 2,227,037 at the Vienna location.

Regional developments

Demand from the Far East increased by an impressive 19.3% over the same period, while passengers from North America increased by 6.8%. In contrast, the number of passengers from Eastern Europe stagnated, while those from the Middle East even recorded a decline. This indicates different recovery dynamics in the individual market segments.

The comprehensive positive development is supported by the financial key figures of the Flughafen Wien Group. In the period from Q1 to Q3 2024, passenger growth was 9.1% to a total of 31.6 million passengers in the group and 7.2% to 24.1 million at Vienna Airport. Sales rose 13.3% to 792.5 million euros, reflecting the company's robust financial condition.

Investments and outlook

The Vienna Airport Group is planning investments of over 200 million euros for 2024, particularly in the expansion of the terminals and the construction of a new hotel. The passenger guidance for 2024 forecasts more than 39 million passengers across the entire group and over 30 million at the Vienna location. 838,393 passengers were counted at Malta Airport in October 2024, an increase of 8.7% compared to the same month last year.

The positive trends and developments in passenger numbers and financial results clearly show how important Vienna Airport is for the aviation industry in the region. Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, the airport appears to be on a sustainable growth path in terms of both passengers and cargo.
