Attention, Orlando: New theme park hotspot in the Arabian desert sands
The United Arab Emirates, particularly Abu Dhabi, are increasingly coming into focus as an outstanding destination in the area of theme parks. This comes in exciting competition with Orlando, which has been the undisputed leader among theme park destinations for decades. Traditionally known for its oil reserves and camel racing, Abu Dhabi is now transforming into an exciting playground full of attractions that could seriously challenge Orlando.
A spectacular new beginning with Disney
In May 2025, Disney announced that Abu Dhabi had been awarded its first new theme park in 15 years. This decision fell in favor of the UAE capital, although other major theme park locations in California, Japan and even Orlando were also considered. “There was no doubt,” explains Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences.
The breathtaking attractions of Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is already home to impressive leisure offerings such as Ferrari World, home to the world's fastest roller coaster, Warner Bros. World (licensed by CNN's parent company Warner Bros. Discovery) and Yas Waterworld, a sprawling network of slides and pools. SeaWorld Yas Island Abu Dhabi is also of more recent origin. This variety of attractions shows that the emirate is a serious challenger to Orlando.
Disneyland Abu Dhabi: The future of theme parks
Disneyland Abu Dhabi is expected to open on Yas Island in the early 2030s and is expected to be the company's most technologically advanced park. Visuals show a shimmering, futuristic tower at the center of the park, more reminiscent of Abu Dhabi's glittering skyline than a traditional European castle. It will also be the first Disney resort located on an accessible coastline, just 20 minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi.
Collaboration with Miral for a unique experience
The development, construction and operation of the theme park are in the hands of Miral, the company that is already responsible for the offering on Yas Island. Disney Imagineers will provide creative design and operational oversight to ensure the new park meets the high standards of the Disney brand.
Growth and demand: The theme park market in Abu Dhabi
There is already a lot of demand: in 2024, Yas Island saw a 20% increase in visitor numbers. Expansion is already well underway, including a Harry Potter-themed area at Warner Bros. World, record-breaking rides at Ferrari World, new themed hotels and even two beaches along the Yas Bay waterfront.
A new chapter in theme park history
Developments in Abu Dhabi show that the region is becoming a major player not only in terms of oil money but also in the realm of entertainment. Abu Dhabi is poised to maintain its place at the top of theme park destinations and challenge Orlando for the title.
