Serious accident in Beckedorf: tractor collides with freight train!

On June 18, 2025, a serious accident occurred at an unguarded railway crossing in Beckedorf, Germany. A tractor driver was trying to cross the level crossing on Zur Hünenburg Street when she collided with a freight train coming from the direction of Celle. The train initiated emergency braking, but was no longer able to avoid the collision. The driver was thrown from the tractor in the accident and suffered serious injuries.

The tractor was thrown into the side room by the force of the impact. The Beckedorf fire department was alerted at 6:12 p.m. to collect supplies and take safety measures. The railway emergency manager finally gave permission for the train to leave the scene of the accident. The tractor had to be rescued from the tracks by a crane. The police started investigating the exact cause of the accident, while the fire brigade ended the operation after around 1.5 hours.

Safety measures in focus

The incident once again sheds light on the safety situation at level crossings in Germany. The Deutsche Bahn group has been working for some time to reduce the number of level crossings in order to minimize the risk of accidents. In the 1990s there were still around 28,000 such intersections in Germany, while in 2023 there were only 15,820. Measures such as tunneling under or building over tracks are intended to increase safety for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

The statistical data shows that the number of accidents at level crossings fell by more than 75% between 1995 and 2023. In 2023, only 154 accidents were registered nationwide. It is further pointed out that over 95% of collisions between cars and trains are due to inattention, carelessness or ignorance. This risk is comprehensively recorded in the Statistics on the traffic safety situation.

Results and measures

The data on traffic accident statistics are not only used for analysis, but also form the basis for future measures in legislation, traffic education, road construction and vehicle technology. The comprehensive information on accidents, those involved and the causes of accidents enable a differentiated view of the safety situation in the German transport system.

The accident in Beckedorf is a tragic example of the dangers that exist at unguarded level crossings. Deutsche Bahn is doing everything it can to further reduce such incidents through targeted measures to ensure the safety of all road users.
