New sidewalk on Iselweg: Lienz takes measures against flooding!
The Rechts Iselweg in Lienz will be closed for construction work from Monday, June 16th, until September 9th. The aim of this measure is to create a wide sidewalk as part of the comprehensive flood protection measures in the region. These measures are becoming increasingly important, especially in the context of the increasing risks of heavy rain and flooding due to climate change, as has already been observed in several German regions. Experts emphasize that the likelihood of more frequent flood events is increasing and are calling for new approaches to flood protection to better prepare cities for extreme weather ZDF today.
The new sidewalk along the Rechter Iselweg will be 1.75 meters wide. In the areas of the Spitalsbrücke and Iselsteg it will be even wider and partially planted to create a pleasant pedestrian promenade. It is important to mention that no cycle path is planned along this one-way street. Cyclists are therefore forced to share the road with cars or use the Iselkai, where cycling is allowed, reports Dolomite town.
Flood protection measures and their necessity
In recent years, the dramatic floods in regions such as Reichertshofen have revealed deficits in flood protection. The public sector is investing billions in expensive flood protection measures, while other plans, such as in Roding, have been stopped. Climate change is forcing us to rethink and modernize our infrastructure. Theo Schmitt, a renowned expert in heavy rain risk management, emphasizes that cities must rely on new architecture and infrastructure to meet the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions.
In addition, the renovation or new construction of dikes is necessary as many of them are getting old. The challenges of converting existing cities are great, but still necessary for effective flood protection. There are numerous individual measures for private homeowners, such as sealing light wells, backflow protection and having sandbags available, which can help reduce risk.
Financial dimensions and outlook
The costs for consistent heavy rain management are estimated at several billion euros. In Germany, the damage caused by floods in the Ahr Valley and the Erft in July 2021 was estimated at 40.5 billion euros. The federal government expects that the costs that will be incurred due to climate change by 2050 could be between 280 and 900 billion euros. This economic risk shows the importance of taking proactive and effective measures in the area of flood protection, added ZDF today.
The planned construction work on the Rechter Iselweg in Lienz is therefore not only a step towards a safe path for pedestrians, but also part of a larger strategy to reduce risks at a time when the challenges posed by climate change are becoming increasingly visible.
