Lower Austria's Numen Riesling: Best Riesling in the World 2025!
The US wine magazine “Wine Enthusiast” has once again published a list of the best wines worldwide this year. Over 25,000 wines were tasted to determine the top 100. In this renowned ranking, a Lower Austrian Riesling was named the best Riesling in the world. The “Numen Riesling 2021” from Velm-Götzendorf, a municipality in the Gänserndorf district, scored 96 points and took 24th place in the overall rating.
Johannes Zillinger, who looks back on a long tradition with his winery, runs the family business, which has existed since the 16th century. Zillinger took over the winery from his parents and has specialized in the production of natural wines for the past 15 years. The family business cultivates 20 hectares of vineyards and cultivates 22 different grape varieties. As a result of the award, the winery received numerous reservation requests, but has no plans to increase production for the time being.
Biodynamic cultivation and sustainable principles
The Zillinger winery in Velm-Götzendorf has been committed to biodynamic viticulture for over 30 years. Johannes Zillinger follows the principles of biodynamic agriculture, which emphasize the use of home-made compost and growing his own herbs. These sustainable methods are intended to create healthy soils that produce healthy vines and remarkable wines.
Zillinger's minimally invasive approach in the vineyard and cellar reflects his belief that working carefully with nature produces truly exciting wines. “The wines from Zillinger are an expression of the natural magic in bottles,” say experts.
The successes that Zillinger achieves with his biodynamic approach can also be seen in the context of the increasing popularity of natural wines. These wines are becoming more and more important, not only because of their taste, but also because of their organic production. As Alnatura explains, biodynamic viticulture promotes the health of the soil and thus the quality of the grapes.
The “Numen Riesling 2021” is not only a wine of excellent quality, but also the result of a philosophy that revolves around sustainability and respect for nature. This year, the top spot for the best Riesling in the world is shared with a wine from Canada, further highlighting the international competition in wine production.
