Styria under pressure: 43,000 unemployed - like further in the job market?

Steiermark, Österreich - In Styria there are alarming developments in the labor market that heavily burden the region. According to the AMS Styria, 35,120 people were already unemployed at the end of November 2024, which corresponds to an increase of 4,635 people or 15.2 percent compared to the previous year. Including the 8,567 participants in training, there is a total number of 43,687 people without employment, this corresponds to an increase of 11.7 percent compared to November 2023, as the Kleine Zeitung reported.

Ukrainian workforce in focus

In the middle of this turbulent situation, AMS boss Karl-Heinz Snobe focuses on the potential of Ukrainian refugees in the region. At the moment of the 6,000 Ukrainians who live in basic care are 2,000 children and 1,000 people in retirement age. Snobe estimates that up to 3,000 of these people could be taught in jobs by the AMS if the support for Ukrainians is adapted accordingly. He emphasizes that a ending of the basic supply system is being sought in order to transfer these people into social assistance, which would trigger the obligation to transfer it. Snobe is optimistic that many Ukrainians, especially women and younger people with young children, are willing to build up a existence in Styria and to accept long-term jobs, especially in the health and service sector where there is already a large number of them. This information comes from Orf Styria .

The employment situation remains tense and Snobe warns of overloading the AMS structures due to the steadily increasing numbers. The pressure on the AMS is growing because the number of unemployed is expected to continue to increase. The region faces a double challenge: the integration of refugees into the labor market and the coping with growing unemployment.
