Unemployment among women is increasing: These developments are shocking!

At the end of December 2024, unemployment in Austria caused a stir when the number rose to 426,012 - an increase of 27,007 compared to the previous year, like that oe24 reported. This leads to an unemployment rate of 8.3 percent. While the number of employed people rose to a record 3,912,000 people, the absolute number of vacancies reported to AMS fell to 80,740. Women were particularly hard hit by the increase, with 15,095 people affected, compared to the 11,912 men who became unemployed or were in training. Particularly striking is youth unemployment, which stands at 67,658 people.

Economic resilience and active labor market policy

According to Labor and Economics Minister Martin Kocher, the labor market is showing remarkable resilience to the tense global economic conditions. Those too OTS reported that Austrian labor market policy made over 270,000 people more successful through targeted training measures in 2024. Not only does this contribute to workforce skills, but it is also associated with a decline in unemployment in future quarters.

In addition to these positive developments, the average unemployment rate of 7 percent for 2024 shows that Austria is doing better compared to the last ten years (average 8 percent). It is interesting to note that despite the increase in unemployment, the number of proven job vacancies in 2024 still remains high. The minister emphasizes that it is necessary to overcome future challenges through increased training and support for skilled workers in order to meet the need for qualified workers.
