Viennese professor receives international prize for groundbreaking water research

The renowned Professor Günter BLöschl from the Vienna University of Technology receives the prestigious Stockholm Water Prize, one of the highest awards for water research in the world. How Small newspaper reports, BLöschl is being honored for his groundbreaking contributions to understanding the interactions between climate change and flood risk. Over the last 20 years, his research shows that flood events have increased in trend, which can be attributed to the influence of regional climate processes. Blöschl described the award as a “great honor” and emphasized how lucky he is to work with outstanding scientists.

The 63-year-old hydrologist researches at the interface of hydraulic engineering, climate and society. Using historical data and computer models, he analyzes the risks of defined flood events. His innovative approach to “socio-hydrology” offers a comprehensive view of the relationship between human activity and natural water cycles, and is internationally recognized. BLöschl has conducted research at renowned institutions in the USA, Canada and Australia and has received several awards, including the Horton Medal from the American Geophysical Union.

Science with vision

In addition to his achievements, BLöschl is also recognized for his role in the academic community. At the TU Vienna, he not only made a contribution to research, but also to training the next generation of engineers and scientists. While his research gives meaning to every droplet, he also demonstrates the potential to transform knowledge about water and related challenges. Loud TU Vienna, he wants to use his work to bring about positive change to shape the world in a sustainable way.
