Warning strike at VW: Employees fight against wage cuts and layoffs!
The warning strike at Volkswagen has begun and is causing a stir! In Zwickau, the first employees stopped work and set off for a planned rally, as a dpa reporter observed on site. The protest spread quickly and reached other locations, including the main plant in Wolfsburg, Hanover, Braunschweig, Emden and Chemnitz. IG Metall has decided to temporarily bring production to a standstill in nine of the ten German VW plants!
The pressure is increasing!
“At the negotiating table, Volkswagen was not prepared to find a viable solution to the collective bargaining dispute,” explained Dirk Schulze, the IG Metall district manager responsible for Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony. “Therefore, warning strikes must increase the pressure on management.” IG Metall is putting everything on one card to fight against the looming billion-dollar cuts at Europe's largest car manufacturer. VW is demanding a drastic pay cut of ten percent from its employees! Plant closures and redundancies for operational reasons are also on the agenda.
The warning strike is strategically planned: It should last around two hours and then be repeated in every shift. In Wolfsburg, a large rally is scheduled for this morning directly at the board high-rise, at which works council boss Daniela Cavallo and Lower Saxony's IG Metall district manager Thorsten Gröger will take the floor. The next round of collective bargaining takes place on December 9th and the excitement is rising!
