Serious accident while tobogganing: Rescue operation in Flachau under time pressure!
There were dramatic rescue operations in the Austrian Alps last night when two men were seriously injured while descending mountain tours. The Flachau mountain rescue service was alerted around 10 p.m. after a 54-year-old tobogganer came off the toboggan run. He skidded into an adjacent forest and fell over rocky terrain. Lukas Perner, local branch manager of the Flachau mountain rescue service, reported: "We were able to provide him with initial care with the support of the mountain rescue doctor from Altenmarkt. He suffered very serious injuries and was taken to Schwarzach Hospital by Red Cross employees." The circumstances of his fall are now being investigated as the relevant authorities examine the exact details of the incident, such as salzburg.orf.at reported.
Difficult rescue after a crash
Already in the afternoon there was another incident in the Zauchensee region, also with a serious outcome. A 54-year-old ski tourer from Lower Austria fell over a five-meter-high rock while descending the Lackenkogel. The Altenmarkt mountain rescue service was alerted at 3 p.m. when the severity of the accident became apparent. Under difficult conditions such as falling darkness and heavy snow, 14 mountain rescuers set out to reach the seriously injured man. Thomas Gotthardt, local branch manager of the Altenmarkt mountain rescue service, explained: “It was a race against time because the man was seriously injured.” After initial treatment by the mountain rescue doctor, the patient was finally flown by helicopter to the Schwarzach Clinic meinkreis.at reported.
The two incidents highlight the dangers associated with mountain sports and the importance of professional rescue teams. The quick action of the mountain rescue and the Red Cross could have been crucial for the chances of survival of those affected. In both cases, the mountain rescuers did an outstanding job saving lives under extreme conditions.
