In picturesque Saalbach-Hinterglemm, the Ski World Championships came to an end on Sunday afternoon with a real medal thriller. The Austrian team did not achieve any podium finishes in the final competition, the men's slalom, but was able to win an impressive seven medals in total: two gold, three silver and two bronze. The Austrian team was behind Switzerland, which celebrated one of the most successful World Ski Championships in its history with 13 medals, including five gold medals, as 20 Minutes reported. This great performance was the best for the Swiss since 1987.
The Slalom World Championship title went to the talented Loïc Meillard, who became the first Swiss in this discipline in 75 years. Not only did he ensure the glorious conclusion, but he also collected two gold and one silver medals during the World Cup. Overall, the Swiss clearly outperformed the Austrians and celebrated their outstanding results, which Swiss Ski President Urs Lehmann described as “unique”. Meanwhile, Bartholomäus “Bartl” Gensbichler, President of the Salzburg Ski Association, said after the competition that they were “overjoyed” with the results achieved and that they had done an outstanding job.
Clear medal playing field
A total of 175,000 spectators took part in the eleven competitions during the World Cup. The security forces, including 450 Red Cross personnel, were involved in 128 operations, with the most frequent operations related to skiing injuries. Despite the challenges, the emergency services were impressed by the smooth organization and cooperation between various authorities, which, according to state rescue commander Stefan Herbst, contributed to the successful implementation of the World Cup. The gates for the next World Ski Championships will open in Crans-Montana, where the FIS flag has already been handed over, which was a crowning conclusion to the event in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, as ORF noted.
