School gardens are flourishing: with shared strength for sustainable nutrition!
A pilot project at schools in St. Georgen and St. Stefan ob Stainz promotes sustainable nutrition through school gardens and regional cooperation.

School gardens are flourishing: with shared strength for sustainable nutrition!
In the heart of Styria, two middle schools have started impressive projects on the topics of sustainability and horticulture, which are now celebrating their first successes. The middle school in St. Georgen has transformed its school garden into a so-called “Groovy Garden”, which acts as a showcase project for sustainable nutrition and creative gardening. This innovative approach is not just about growing vegetables, but also connecting to art and science. Students and teachers are thrilled to have created a place where everyone can be introduced to nature through fun and creativity. As the NOP reported, the project also aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through local food production.
At the same time, the St. Stefan ob Stainz middle school also designed its own school garden, which offered activities for students during the summer semester. After planting herbs and vegetables in elaborately constructed raised beds, everyone involved was soon able to harvest the first fruits of their labor, including tomatoes and salads. Headteacher Claudia Schwarz highlights that this not only reflects a great opportunity for practical learning, but also shows how regional companies have contributed to supporting the project. So reported MyDistrict about the donations and materials purchased for the raised beds and garden maintenance.
Focus on community and education
In both schools, the students not only showed great commitment, but also learned how important it is to work together towards a goal. There were even cooking classes at St. Stefan, where students transformed the results of their harvest into creative dishes. These practical experiences are seen as a valuable addition to everyday school life and at the same time promote the children's team spirit and sense of responsibility. The commitment of everyone involved can be seen not only in the newly purchased raised beds, but also in the positive energy and motivation that comes from the students in both projects.
