New online assistant for residence rights in Vienna launched!

On January 14, 2025, the City of Vienna introduced a new online assistant for immigration applications in English. This is a significant advance for international applicants seeking residency in Austria and represents an expansion of existing services. The new online assistant, found under the “Immigration” section, guides users through a multi-stage query process with around 60 targeted questions. The application is designed to provide precise information on the procedures and allows applicants to book an appointment with the relevant authority or obtain further information. As the City of Vienna reports, this step was taken to further improve the quality of service.

Online assistant functions

The online assistant covers three central topic blocks: family, education and work. The platform also offers support for people who want to switch from an asylum entitlement to a residence permit. Vice Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr emphasized the importance of this digital assistance and stated that the existing pages have now been revised in an easy-to-understand language. The new function came after the positive use of the first online assistant, which has already recorded over 7,400 hits since its launch in August 2024, as Georg Hufgard-Leitner, head of the City of Vienna Department - Immigration and Citizenship, announced.

Those interested can use an online survey to find out which right of residence is best for them. This orientating decision-making aid explains the relevant criteria, including nationality, length of stay and individual living circumstances such as working or studying in Austria. After the survey, users are directed directly to the MA 35 website, where they can find further necessary information on requirements and required documents. Comprehensive access to information is an essential step in promoting a clear and transparent immigration policy in Austria, said wien.gv.at.
