Art and life: Sabine Wiedenhofer opens the doors to her dream house in Vienna

The artist Sabine Wiedenhofer opens the doors to her life and her creative space in Vienna-Ottakring. In an interview with oe24 she describes how she discovered her dream home in 2004, the one she was looking for for herself and her family. The decision was made to go on a quiet street and not on a “splashy” district. Wiedenhofer describes the house as “love at first sight” and is drawn to the energy of the place. She lives with her 17-year-old daughter, her 19-year-old son and the dog Lola in this three-story building, which was the result of an inheritance.

The artist appreciates the relaxed neighborhood and multicultural environment of her home area. She set up her bedroom in the former studio, where many of her first works were created. On the ground floor she designed an inviting entrance hall, a living and dining room and an office. A particular highlight is her kitchen, which she has turned into an interactive art project; Guests are allowed to write on the fronts with touch-up pens. The dining room features a collection of Murano glass figurines from her installation “Man, Don't Worry,” and the walls are lined with abstract paintings that reflect her view of the world.

Creativity and community

Wiedenhofer attaches particular importance to the function of her home as a meeting place for friends, family and colleagues. She also shows a strong commitment to the community in her artistic work. She has developed spatial concepts as part of “Artists Projects” to promote creativity in living spaces. Her work reflects a personal interest in the human condition as she explores issues of contemporary society and denounces injustices through various media.

Wiedenhofer's works address an alarming status quo in global affairs and advocate for togetherness and cooperation. With her series “Suspended Words” she surprises with humorous wall sculptures that use empty cartridges to raise relevant questions and encourage people to rethink. Her art is a poetic intervention that uses the medium of glass and the “aesthetics of violence” to send a powerful call for change.

Looking into the future

Wiedenhofer's latest project, a set for the Verdi requiem “Mass for Humanity,” will premiere on May 31st. At the same time, she is planning further exhibitions, including the “PASSION” at the Künstlerhaus Vienna from May 9th to June 1st, 2025 and a presentation at the Boca Raton Museum of Art from April to October 2025. Participation in the Art Austria Highlights in Hong Kong in August 2025 is also on her program, as are various group exhibitions in the coming years.

In the midst of these exciting developments, Vienna's art scene proves to be dynamic, but also challenging the standard reported. The Offspace Discotec, opened by Felix Dennhardt, Agnes Varnai and Peter Varnai, has developed into a hub for young artists. The creative potential of Vienna becomes visible at performances by the Club Fortuna collective. The central location of the offspace in Schleifmühlgasse opens up new perspectives for the visibility of art.

Sabine Wiedenhofer's involvement in the art world and her creative projects not only promote her own career, but also the community around her. Your home is not only a retreat, but also a creative incubator that represents the diversity and dynamism of the Vienna art scene.
