Cat saves owner from house fire in Pettenbach!

On Sunday morning, November 16, 2025, a dramatic incident occurred in an allotment settlement in Pettenbach, Upper Austria. A 57-year-old resident was woken up by his cat and thus saved from a fire that had broken out in his garden house. At around 10 a.m. he noticed that the interior of his house was already heavily filled with smoke.

Quick action was necessary for the resident. Since the front door was jammed, he had to kick it in to get outside. After escaping, he immediately tried to put out the fire himself. Unfortunately, the flames were so strong that the entire house and a car parked next to it were destroyed. Seven fire departments were deployed to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings and to fight the fire. Despite the dramatic situation, both the resident and his cat remained uninjured, as 5min reports.

Alarming circumstances

The investigation into the cause of the fire is currently ongoing. At this point, the rooms in the allotment house were already enveloped in thick smoke, which made the 57-year-old's situation all the more dramatic. He was treated by paramedics although he suffered no physical injuries. Nevertheless, the material damage is significant as the house burned down completely and a car was also affected. The fire brigade was able to prevent the flames from spreading to the neighboring buildings, which was a priority at the time, as stated in a report by Kurier.

Rescuing animals is an important part of the fire department's work. However, this should ideally be done when the safety of everyone involved is guaranteed. As Feuerwehr UB points out, cats can often get themselves into dangerous situations, but when it comes to animal rescues at higher altitudes, a certain amount of time is often waited because cats usually find a way out on their own.

Overall, this incident shows not only the important role pets play in our lives, but also the potential dangers that can lurk in our everyday lives. The 57-year-old man's quick reaction and the intervention of his cat led to a happy outcome to this threatening situation. The fire brigade's commitment and ability to act quickly may have prevented something worse from happening and the flames from spreading to neighboring buildings were successfully averted.
