Green happiness for Vienna: StadtGartl registration starts now!
The innovative Wiener StadtGartl project started registration for its garden areas on March 23, 2025, which is accessible to all interested Viennese. With an offer that makes it possible to rent a piece of nature of 70 to 110 m² for 3.5 years, the Vienna StadtGartl is intended not only to promote gardening, but also to strengthen social cohesion and respectful cooperation. In a city where the City of Vienna owns about half of the land, this project offers the opportunity for affordable housing and the creation of green spaces that are accessible to everyone, such as Vienna.gv.at reported.
Two gardens are designated for the communities: In the 21st district there are 31 gardens on Julius-Ficker-Straße, which are specifically intended for families with children and have a rental price of around €36 per month. In the 22nd district on Biberdeckenweg, those interested can choose from 18 gardens that can be rented for around €38 per month. There are communal facilities with cooking facilities, toilets and storage facilities in both complexes. In addition, the garden areas are delimited by natural hedges and each plot is equipped with a pergola.
Application and award process
Applications for the garden plots are possible from now until April 20, 2025. The award is made by lottery, so that everyone interested has a fair chance of receiving one of the coveted gardens. After the first rental period of 3.5 years, a new lease will be allocated by lottery. The annual costs are €430 in the 21st district and €460 in the 22nd district. This project is also being scientifically supported in order to be able to continually improve and optimize future offerings.
In addition, the Urban Renewal Area Management will offer support with community activities and questions about gardening. Particular emphasis is placed on putting the community at the center and creating something common, which also focuses on social diversity and integration.
People and Garden: Urban Gardening in Context
The Wiener StadtGartl project fits into a larger trend of urban gardening, which is gaining importance in many European cities such as Berlin, Vienna, Paris and Barcelona. Niklas Georg Witt's work, which was created at the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences, examines the role of urban gardening and its political and social objectives. This analysis shows what importance urban gardening activities can have not only for the individual, but also for the community and urban development DigiBib reported.
Promoting activities like the Wiener StadtGartl not only supports personal gardening culture, but also contributes to strengthening the community and sustainable urban development. More and more people are realizing that gardening in urban areas is not only fun, but also a valuable resource for social interaction.
