Festive film archive: New cinema salon and digital platform launch!

In 2025, Filmarchiv Austria will celebrate its 70th anniversary with a variety of new and exciting events. On January 20, 2024, the digital platform “Filmarchiv ON” will go online free of charge, making one or two selected films from different eras as well as historical film documents available every week. Full-length films are online for a month, while historical documents remain permanently accessible in the media library. This ensures that the rich film heritage becomes accessible to a wider audience, such as orf.at reported.

Another highlight is the opening of the cinema salon in the Metro Kinokulturhaus, which will open on January 24, 2025. This temporary pop-up cinema hall can accommodate around 80 visitors and is largely made from recycled materials and used equipment. The goal is to meet the high demand for the cultural venue and at the same time create new opportunities for its program work. The extensive retrospective “Land Surveying” on Austrian film history, which will run throughout the anniversary year, also promises exciting insights with monthly thematic focuses, starting with local film, such as silentfilm-magazin.de reported.

Diverse programs and initiatives

Additionally, a newly designed monthly magazine will spotlight film heritage and annual programs such as “Classic Line” and “Faszination Filmarchivierung”. These programs show selected international re-releases and fascinating new discoveries from the film world cultural heritage and will invite the audience to explore the archive and its valuable holdings in more detail. In total, the Film Archive Austria stores around 200,000 films as well as a large number of posters and publications, ranging from the past to the present. These initiatives will continue to enrich the work of the archive and bring film history to a wider audience.
