Eating on wheels: 450,000 portions for seniors in the Rohrbach district

In Austria, the "Essen on wheels" initiative in the Rohrbach and Aigen-Schlägl districts ensures important support for older people. According to information from meinzirk.at , over 450,000 portions of warm meals have been delivered and the question increases continuously. The committed team, consisting of 20 volunteer drivers, currently supplies 128 customers seven days a week with a menu for 10.60 euros. The drivers make up to 30 stops every day to offer older people not only food, but also social contacts by changing a few friendly words.

hunger and poverty: an alarming problem

In view of the increasing poverty in Austria, the importance of such social offers becomes even clearer. Over 1.3 million people are affected by poverty, such as bpb.de . The situation of live and single parents is particularly precarious who have to deal with a risk of poverty of 23.7 and 26.4 %. Poverty is defined in the EU as a state in which people have such a small means that they are excluded from the socially accepted lifestyle. The risk of poverty is at a monthly income of less than 1,314 euros, which heavily burdens some groups in Austria.

The combination of the need to help older people with food and services, as well as the alarming statistics on the risk of poverty shows how important social initiatives are. The excellent work of the volunteers is recognized by the population and illustrates the basic needs of people who often live in their loneliness and rely on support.
