Decoration of honor for Otmar Roschitz: A life for helping refugees!
On September 21, 2025, Peter Kaiser, Governor of Carinthia, presented the Decoration of Honor of the State of Carinthia to Otmar Roschitz. This award took place as part of Roschitz's early birthday and graduation celebration in St. Georgen am Sandhof. Roschitz was honored for his many years of service in refugee care and basic care, after working in the Federal Agency for Care and Support Services (BBU) and in the Ministry of the Interior. Kaiser highlighted his significant contribution to overcoming the challenges in asylum and refugee policy, particularly with regard to the federal quarters that have been set up since 2015.
At the celebration, numerous colleagues from the BBU and the “Peer Support” of the Carinthia State Police Directorate congratulated. Angela Roschitz, head of State Department 13, gave an insight into her husband's impressive career, who worked in the executive branch for over thirty years in various roles, including with Cobra and as an undercover agent. From 2015 he was responsible for setting up the federal care facilities for refugees in Carinthia and has been the BBU's southern regional manager since 2018.
Many years of service in refugee policy
Kaiser emphasized the importance of Roschitz's work in asylum and refugee policy and noted the importance of the successful implementation of decisions made outside the state. These successes reflect the challenges many European countries are facing as refugee numbers have risen in recent years. According to current statistics on asylum practice in Austria, which are based on asyl.at, support within the framework of basic services relates to key areas such as child refugees, displaced persons from Ukraine and family reunification.
Roschitz warmly thanked those present and praised the team for the work they had done. The presentation of the decoration is not only a recognition of his personal achievements, but also takes a look at the security policy and social challenges that Austria had to overcome in this area.
