Armed robbery on bank in Deutsch Jahrndorf – police are looking!

On Monday afternoon, the peace in Deutsch Jahrndorf, a town in the Neusiedl am See district, was disturbed by an armed attack on a bank branch. An unknown man threatened the bank employees with a gun and demanded cash. According to the Burgenland State Police Department, a search for the suspected perpetrators was immediately launched.

Fortunately, the robbery went off without anyone being injured, but the amount of money stolen initially turned out to be unclear. The perpetrator fled in a car driven by a second person, which is why the police are asking the public for information in order to stop the suspects' escape as quickly as possible. Small newspaper reports that rapid action by the authorities is necessary in view of the increasing crime in Austria.

Alarm search and public safety

The alarm manhunt was launched immediately after the attack by mobilizing police forces throughout the area. Considering the overall situation, it is not only the bank that was affected, but also the general security situation in the region. In recent years there has been an increase in crimes in Austria, which in 2023 reached the highest level since 2016 with around 528,000 reported crimes. Statista recorded, among other things, an increase in violent and property crimes.

The police clearance rate was 52.3% in 2023, which represents a small increase compared to the previous year. This shows the efforts of the police forces to combat rising crime. With 70% of the population believing that immigrants exacerbate crime problems, the discussion about migration and security is becoming more explosive. Many citizens are calling for an increased fight against crime, including drug and cybercrime, which also reached a peak in 2023.

However, at a time when the security forces in Austria are burdened by challenges, the population's trust in the police is relatively high. According to a survey from spring 2024, 77% of respondents have trust in the work of the police.
