Top UN court dismisses Sudan's lawsuit against UAE
The International Court of Justice has dismissed Sudan's genocide lawsuit against the UAE. The ruling strengthens the UAE's claim that it is not responsible for the conflict in Sudan.

Top UN court dismisses Sudan's lawsuit against UAE
The International Court of Justice has dismissed Sudan's lawsuit alleging that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) violated the Genocide Convention by supporting paramilitary forces in the Darfur region.
Court declares lack of jurisdiction
On Monday, the court announced that it did not have the jurisdiction to issue the measures against the UAE requested by Sudan. The justices voted to end the case.
UAE welcomes the decision
The UAE reacted quickly to the ruling. Reem Ketait, the deputy minister for political affairs, said in a statement that the decision "is a clear and decisive confirmation that this case was completely without merit." She added: "The court's finding of lack of jurisdiction confirms that this case should never have been brought."
Criticism of Sudan's argument
Ketait further stated: "Simply put, today's decision represents a double rejection of the Sudanese Armed Forces' attempt to exploit the court in its campaign of disinformation and distract from its own responsibility." She stressed that "the facts speak for themselves: the UAE bears no responsibility for the conflict in Sudan. On the contrary, the atrocities committed by the warring parties are well documented."
Sudan's lawsuit and the allegations
Sudan filed a lawsuit against the UAE in March accusing it of arming the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a claim the UAE has always denied. Sudan's acting justice minister, Muawia Osman, told the court: "A genocide is being carried out against the Masalit ethnic group in the west of our country, with the support and complicity of the United Arab Emirates."
The bloody conflict in Sudan
Since April 2023, two of Sudan's most powerful generals - Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who leads the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), and his former ally Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo of the paramilitary RSF - have been engaged in a bloody dispute over control of the country, which is divided between their power centers.
Humanitarian crisis and diplomatic efforts
The ongoing civil war has caused one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters, and diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have so far failed.
