At least 25 deaths after targeted capsists from inflatable boat through smugglers

at least 25 people, including several children, died after their boat near the Komoren Islands was deliberately capsed by human dealers, the local office of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) shared on Monday.

tragic incident in front of the comors

"The Iom Komoren is sad about the news of the death of at least 25 people after their boat was deliberately capsized by human retailers in front of the comors, between Anjouan and Mayotte," says a press release from the UN Authority.

saved survivors report

The boat was on board with around 30 people, including seven women and four children. This was reported by the IOM, citing five survivors who were saved by fishermen on Saturday morning.

incidents in the past few months

The IOM points out that this incident is already the third in the past three months in the same region: in September a boat with 12 people disappeared on board, including two children and a pregnant woman when it left the coast of Anjouan and never reached Mayotte. Another incident occurred in August when eight people-including a 12-year-old boy-were killed.

migration on dangerous routes

"Thousands of people have died on this migration route since 2011, while they tried to reach the controversial island of Mayotte, which belongs to the Archipelago of the Komoren and is a French department," continued the IOM.

call to secure migration paths

The agency emphasized the “importance of creating safe and legal migration paths” to prevent such tragedies in the future.
