Dead Brazilian tourist discovered after volcano crash in Indonesia

São Paulo, Brazil – Tragic news is shaking the country: 26-year-old Juliana Marins, a young hiker from Brazil, was found dead after falling from the top of the active volcano Mount Rinjani on the Indonesian island of Lombok. She was missing for almost four days while millions of people in Brazil took part in the dramatic rescue operation with anxious thoughts and prayers.

The dramatic events

Juliana Marins had climbed to the summit of the 3,726-meter-high volcano with a guide and five other foreigners on June 21 when she fell about 600 meters, Indonesian authorities reported. Mohammad Syafii, the head of Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency, announced: "No signs of life have been found." Her death was confirmed by her family in Brazil.

Rescue operation under extreme conditions

A rescue team found Marins' body using a thermal imaging drone near a crater after several days of intensive searching in extreme weather and difficult terrain. The difficult conditions and low visibility had made the evacuation process difficult, Syafii explained. The rescue team had to wait until Wednesday to transport her body to the police hospital after taking her to Sembalun Base Camp.

Reactions in Brazil

Accusations and inconsistencies

The exact circumstances of her death remained unclear. In addition, the Brazilian embassy in Jakarta accused the Indonesian government of fabricating Marins' rescue and giving her family false information that she had been found and given food and water just hours after her fall. There was no immediate response from the Indonesian government to these allegations.

About Juliana Marins

Juliana Marins' family thanked the many Brazilians who prayed for their daughter's safety in a post on Instagram. Juliana was a dancer from Niterói, near Rio de Janeiro, who had been traveling through Asia since February. Before arriving in Indonesia, she had visited the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand.

The island of Lombok is located east of Jakarta and borders the island of Bali. Mount Rinjani, the second highest peak in the country, is a popular destination for trekking lovers.
