World's oldest man, John Tinniswood, dies aged 112
John Tinniswood, the oldest man in the world, has died at the age of 112.
He died on Monday at a nursing home in Southport, England, a press release from Guinness World Records (GWR) confirmed on Tuesday.
A fulfilled life
“His final day was surrounded by music and love,” his family told GWR in a statement. Born on August 26, 1912, John Tinniswood held the record for oldest living man as of April 2024, following the death of 114-year-old Juan Vicente Pérez of Venezuela.
Secret of a long life
Tinniswood wasn't sure how he managed to live so long, describing it as "pure coincidence". “You either live long or short, and there’s not much you can do about it,” he told GWR earlier this year. However, he had one important piece of advice for a healthy life: “Everything in moderation.”
Lessons of wisdom for the future
"If you drink too much, eat too much, or walk too much; if you do too much of anything, you're going to suffer at some point," he explained. Although he couldn't reveal the secret to a long life, Tinniswood did share some life wisdom with the younger generations: "Always do your best, whether you're learning something or teaching someone," he added. "Give it everything you've got. Otherwise it's not worth it."
Family and legacy
Tinniswood is survived by his daughter Susan, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. "John had many great qualities. He was intelligent, decisive, courageous, calm in any crisis, talented in math and a great conversationalist," his family said in a statement.
The oldest people in history
According to GWR, the oldest person ever was Jiroemon Kimura of Japan, who was born in 1897 and died in 2013 at the age of 116. The oldest person in the world also died this year. U.S.-born Maria Branyas Morera died at the age of 117 years and 168 days, making her the eighth oldest person of verifiable age in history, GWR said at the time.
The record for the oldest documented person belongs to Jeanne Louise Calment, who was born on February 21, 1875 and lived 122 years and 164 days, according to the GWR.
