Ice skating season starts: Weißensee is already celebrating the first rounds!
The ice skating season at Wörthersee is still a long time coming, while Weißensee is already open to speed skaters. According to René Riepan, chairman of the Wörthersee Ice Skating Club, the ice thickness on the surrounding lakes is currently only four to six centimeters and is therefore not yet sustainable for safe ice skating. The snowfall of the last few days also affects the growth of the ice as it acts as an insulator and the cold temperatures cannot effectively reach the ice. Riepan emphasizes that you have to wait until the ice gets thicker in order to ultimately be able to ice skate safely on Lake Wörthersee and other lakes such as Lake Längensee and Hörzendorfersee. “We are at very low ice thicknesses and have to be patient,” said Riepan. His club monitors ice conditions daily to keep skaters informed.
On the other hand, there is already a lot of activity at Weißensee: On St. Stephen's Day, a three-kilometer-long circular track was opened for speed skaters and recreational ice skaters. The ice there is about twelve to 15 centimeters thick, which creates ideal conditions for the ice skating season. Norbert Jank, the Weißensee ice master, reports that the ice skating season in the region can last 70 to 80 days. It is important that skaters follow the barriers and safety instructions to avoid possible risks, especially in areas that are considered dangerous.
