McLaren dominates: Piastri leads in qualifying in Barcelona!

On May 31, 2025, the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona will be the focus of attention. Qualifying takes place this Saturday at 4:00 p.m. and the signs point to an exciting event. McLaren is in excellent form and has clearly dominated the last few training sessions. Oscar Piastri, who drives for the team, caused a stir in the third free practice session with a time of 1:12.387 minutes, which gave him a significant lead of 0.526 seconds over his teammate Lando Norris. The two McLaren drivers took the first two places, which placed the team as clear favorites for qualifying.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc couldn't quite keep up with the McLaren drivers, over seven tenths behind, and finished third. Mercedes' George Russell followed in fourth place, while Red Bull's Max Verstappen had to settle for fifth. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton only finished ninth in the other Ferrari. What is particularly noteworthy is that piped Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz ended up in thirteenth place.

Fight for the top spots

In the Drivers' Championship, Oscar Piastri remains in the lead and has a narrow lead of just three points over Norris. Max Verstappen is already 25 points behind the leader. This constellation ensures that the coming races and especially the qualifying in Barcelona promise even more excitement. McLaren has shown impressive dominance since the start of the season, with Piastri already winning four races and Norris taking two victories. Verstappen remains the only non-McLaren driver to win a race this season.

A new technical regulation for front wings recently came into force, which should influence the speed of the teams. Contrary to fears, however, this does not appear to have had a significant impact on McLaren's performance, reinforcing the team's previous superiority.

McLaren between tradition and innovation

McLaren, a team with a long and successful history within Formula 1, now faces the challenge of confirming this form in the coming races. The team has a history of impressive statistics, including a total of 978 Grand Prix starts and 195 victories. The drivers have continued to drive impressively in recent races and could add to the long list of successes.

The upcoming races, particularly today's qualifying in Barcelona, could be crucial for the rest of the season and the title fight, with the McLaren drivers more determined than ever to defend their leading positions. Today could give the team further impetus and further increase the already high tension within Formula 1.
