Celebratory star hike at the border triangle: cross borders!
On September 14, 2025, a cross-border festival took place at the border triangle, the intersection of Carinthia (Austria), Slovenia and Friuli (Italy), in which numerous political representatives and hiking enthusiasts took part. Mayor Reinhard Antolitsch, 2nd Vice Mayor Michaela Scheurer, local councilor Sigrid Wucherer as well as other local councilors and FF commander Michael Miggitsch represented Austria. Antolitsch emphasized the importance of the festival and was disappointed by the absence of Slovenian representatives. Mauro Camolo, who represented the mayor of Tarvisio Renzo Zanette, took part on behalf of Italy and set an example for the regional community. Georg Overs, managing director of the Villach – Faaker See – Ossiacher See tourism region, was also present. This report is confirmed by gailtal-journal.at.
The event was the 44th edition of the popular Tour 3 and enjoyed great participation from hiking enthusiasts who came to the celebration at the Marterl at the 3-country point. Visitors were offered a wide range of culinary options: Italy presented pasta, frigga, various snacks and wine, while Austria served Wiener Schnitzel and sweet treats. Arno Kohlweg and his wife entertained the guests musically, as did the Gailtaler Krainer and the EMV-TK Arnoldstein, who performed at the Dreiländerhütte.
Attractions and Activities
Visitors had the opportunity to reach the border triangle either on foot or with the triple chairlift. The mountain railways at the border triangle will be back in operation from summer 2025, which will further improve accessibility for hikers. The chairlift starts in Arnoldstein and leads to the mountain station at an altitude of 1,469 meters. From there, hikers can climb to the summit of the border triangle, which is at an altitude of 1,508 meters.
The “GRENZgenial” theme trail with 13 informative stations invites hikers to explore the breathtaking landscape and learn more about the region. Once at the mountain station, visitors can experience the beautiful views of the Dobratsch Nature Park and the Julian Alps, including the impressive Mangart.
Events in Carinthia
Carinthia not only offers this event, but also a variety of other cultural and sporting events. Big highlights such as the Women's World Cup in Bad Kleinkirchheim, the European Bike Week at Faaker See and the A1 Beach Volleyball Grand Slam take place every year. There are also numerous smaller festivals, such as wine, cider, bacon and polenta festivals, which are celebrated all year round. These events help to promote Carinthia as an attractive travel destination for both locals and tourists, which is documented by ferien-kaernten.at.
The successful implementation of the festival at the border triangle shows the region's potential for future events and the strengthening of cross-border cooperation. The next edition of Tour 3 at the border triangle is already eagerly awaited.
