Background to UEFA

UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) is the governing body for football, futsal and beach soccer in Europe and some transcontinental countries. It includes 55 national associations and organizes major competitions such as the European Championship, the Nations League, the Champions League, the Europa League and the Conference League. UEFA was founded on June 15, 1954 in Basel, Switzerland, with 31 founding members. The current president is Aleksander Čeferin, who has been in office since September 2016.

An important aspect of UEFA's history was the suspension of all Russian national teams and clubs, which came into effect since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This decision was made in February 2022 and subsequently confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. However, in September 2023, the ban on the Russian U-17 national team was lifted, which was met with opposition from the football associations of Ukraine, England and Sweden.
