The two best teams in the NBA – the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Oklahoma City Thunder – competed in the first game in league history to pit two teams on 15- and 10-game winning streaks.
Exciting duel in Cleveland
Oklahoma City entered Wednesday's exciting duel with 15 consecutive wins, while Cleveland started the game with 10 wins in a row. In a thrilling and nail-biting game, the Cavaliers extended their winning streak to 11 games by defeating the Thunder 129-122 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland.
Countless leadership changes
The game featured 30 lead changes, with Cleveland having won at least 11 consecutive games for the second time all season. At the beginning of the season, the Cavs even went 15-0. The Thunder's 15-game winning streak ended as they suffered their first loss since December 1st.
Strong performances from the Cavaliers
Seven Cavaliers players scored in double figures, led by center Jarrett Allen, who contributed 25 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Power forward Evan Mobley added 21 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
"It felt like a battle all night long. They scored, we scored, stops were made on both sides. In the end it came down to which team showed more effort," Allen said after the win.
Historic team performance
Allen and Mobley are the first Cavaliers teammates to record at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists in a game since LeBron James and Dwyane Wade on November 17, 2017.
Thunder performance
Thunder All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored a game-high 31 points, hitting 13 of 27 shots. Forward Jalen Williams had 25 points, nine assists and five rebounds in the loss.
Outlook and next games
The Cavaliers and Thunder will face off again on January 16th at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. Cleveland improves to 32-4 and hosts the Toronto Raptors on Thursday, while Oklahoma City falls to 30-6 and challenges the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden in New York on Friday.
