Arsenal misses out on important win: title dreams in danger!
An exciting weekend of football shook up the Premier League! Arsenal, title contenders, had to make do with a disappointing 1-1 draw at Brighton, missing the chance to move dangerously close to league leaders Liverpool. The Gunners, who have shone as runners-up for the last two seasons, traveled to the south coast with great ambitions, but the result was anything but pleasant.
17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri, who came on for the injured Bukayo Saka, gave Arsenal a first-half lead and boosted their hopes of victory. But the joy didn't last long! Joao Pedro scored a controversial penalty after an aerial duel with William Saliba, which left coach Mikel Arteta's temper running high. “I've never seen anything like this in my life,” complained Arteta about the referee's decision. “Saliba touches the ball, so there can be no penalty for me!”
Arsenal in crisis?
The draw now leaves the Gunners five points behind Liverpool, who have also played a game less. Arteta had to admit that his team were not at their best that day. "We lost too many simple things. If we don't do the basics right, we can't win," he explained in frustration.
While Arsenal stumbles, Manchester City show they are on the way to regaining their dominance. After a rocky start to the season, the Citizens started their second consecutive winning streak with an impressive 4-1 win against West Ham. Erling Haaland, the Norwegian goalscorer, was once again the hero, scoring twice, while Phil Foden added the finishing touch. “I'm very happy with the result, but we're not back to the old team yet,” said Guardiola, who doesn't consider his team's performance to be sufficient yet.
The pursuers are on the rise
Meanwhile, Newcastle United cemented their ambitions for the Champions League places with a 2-1 win over struggling Tottenham Hotspur. Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak scored the goals as Tottenham remain stuck in the bottom of the table. Coach Postecoglou was visibly disappointed after the game and spoke of a questionable refereeing decision which, in his opinion, influenced the outcome of the game.
The Premier League remains exciting as Liverpool have the chance to move within eight points with a win against Manchester United on Sunday. The championship hunt is far from over and the next games promise plenty of drama!
