Battle for Manbij: Kurds lose control in northern Syria conflict!
In a significant military advance, Turkish-backed Syrian combat units have taken control of large areas around the city of Manbij in northern Syria. A representative of the Turkish security forces announced that offensive air and land operations continue to be aimed at liberating the city from the hands of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). This comes against the backdrop of a possible change of power after long-time ruler Bashar al-Assad lost his control over many areas, such as oe24.at reports.
Optimism after Assad?
Kurdish forces, led by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), had previously hoped that the fall of the Assad regime could open the possibility for a new political beginning in Syria. SDF commander Mazloum Abdi said these changes represent an opportunity to build a new Syria based on democracy and justice, thereby guaranteeing the rights of all Syrians. Many in the region are hopeful for an end to authoritarian rule in Damascus, which could allow for both peace and the return of displaced people, such as ZDF reports.
UN special envoy Geir Pedersen expressed optimism about Syria's future after talks in Doha. He speaks of a possible new beginning and a time of peace and reconciliation for the Syrian people. Pedersen stressed that despite the concerns that many people have, the prospects for the return of displaced people and the reunification of families are positive. While territorial control and political majorities are in flux, the situation remains tense and uncertain for many.
