Syria in transition: return and reconstruction after regime change!

The newly appointed head of Syria's interim government, Mohammed al-Bashir, has called for the return of Syrian refugees living abroad since the start of the civil war in 2011. In an interview with the Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera al-Bashir stressed that his government's first goal is to restore security and stability in all Syrian cities. He explained that the second goal would be the return of the millions of Syrians now living abroad to rebuild the country with their knowledge and experience. Al-Bashir called Syria a "free country" and called on citizens abroad to return and help revitalize their homeland.

Transitional government and political changes

These developments come in the wake of the fall of the Assad regime, with al-Bashir seen as the new leading figure. The Islamist group HTS (Hayat-Tahrir al-Sham), which has led the uprising against Assad, is expected to form an interim government by March 2025 with al-Bashir at the helm. According to reports, the existing government will gradually hand over power to the new cabinet. Al-Bashir, who previously served as head of government in the rebel stronghold of Idlib, wants to unite the institutions established there with the ministries of the overthrown government. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people in Damascus celebrated the fall of the Assad regime and some Syrian Central Bank employees returned to work after a period of uncertainty.

This change of power in Syria could have far-reaching consequences, not only politically, but also for the security situation in the country. According to reports, the Assad regime's secret services will be dismantled and terrorism laws will be repealed. There are also efforts to replace the HTS's military forces with security forces closely linked to the new leadership. The international community, represented by UN envoy Geir Pedersen, emphasizes the need for unity and cooperation between different groups in order to avoid conflicts and create more stable conditions, such as daily news reported.
