PKK fighters disband after conflict with Turkey
The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) announced on Monday that it would disband. This is reported by the pro-Kurdish news agency Firat News Agency. The move would mark a historic shift after decades of conflict with Turkey that have claimed tens of thousands of lives.
The PKK's decision
In a statement, the PKK said: "The 12th Congress of the PKK decided to dissolve the organizational structure of the PKK and end the method of armed struggle." This decision marks a turning point in the strategy of the group, which has long fought for its demanded autonomy and rights.
Leadership by Abdullah Öcalan
The self-dissolution is led by its imprisoned leader, Abdullah Öcalan. The PKK further stated that it had “stopped the work carried out under the PKK name.” This represents a fundamental change in the direction of the organization, which has been in conflict with Turkey for almost five decades.
Historical context of the conflict
The PKK was founded by Öcalan in 1978, and since then Turkey has waged a war against the group for several decades. For a long time, the PKK's central combat goals were to establish an independent coalition Kurdish state in the southeast of the country. In recent years, however, the group has increasingly called for greater autonomy within Turkey.
Ceasefire and Call to Disarmament
In March, the PKK declared an immediate ceasefire after Öcalan called on the militants Lay down weapons and disband the group. This request could be interpreted as a sign of the desire for a more peaceful solution and the search for dialogue with the Turkish government.
