Coalition frustration: FPÖ and ÖVP fail due to power struggles!

After more than a month of intensive negotiations between the FPÖ and the ÖVP, it is clear: the coalition talks have failed. FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl announced in an official communication to Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen that the task of forming a government would be canceled because “to our regret, it was ultimately not crowned with success.” The ÖVP had previously insisted on clarification of the distribution of departments before controversial points could be addressed. According to Kickl, concessions were made in many areas, but the ÖVP remained persistent in its demands, which led to the talks breaking off, it is reported vorarlberg.orf.at.

Assigning blame between the parties

The ÖVP's reaction didn't take long to arrive. Secretary General Alexander Pröll accused Kickl of barely taking an active part in the negotiations and called the FPÖ’s entire negotiating efforts “uncompromising.” He emphasized that the ÖVP negotiated over five days, while Kickl only contributed seven hours. With the offer from the Ministry of Finance they even jumped over their own shadow; Nevertheless, according to Pröll, the FPÖ and Kickl did not meet the requirements for government cooperation. Also the press reported on this exchange of blows and explained that the political situation in Austria is now getting even worse.

There are now possible new elections or a renewed attempt at a coalition between the ÖVP and the SPÖ, while the possibility of an expert government is also being discussed. However, this would have to find a parliamentary majority, which currently appears uncertain. In this tense situation, the SPÖ, the Greens and the NEOS have already signaled their willingness to talk in order to enable a stable and effective government. However, the government's future remains uncertain, while the presidential office says there are "plans in place for all scenarios" to uphold the constitution and create an effective government.
