Bangkok wants to go to Formula 1: mega plans for 2028 revealed!

Thailand is taking ambitious steps to establish a Formula 1 location by 2028. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra recently held talks with Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali during the Monaco Grand Prix. The prospect of a street circuit in Bangkok was discussed, which could represent a promising economic perspective for the country. It is expected that the Formula 1 Grand Prix could generate up to $600 million in revenue, prompting the government to consider this project as an important economic driver.

The focus of the planning is an approximately six kilometer long street circuit that will run through the Chatuchak district in Bangkok. Prime Minister Shinawatra stressed that the event could not only modernize the city's infrastructure but also boost international tourism. A feasibility study will now examine how the project can be implemented, including the route and the investments required to meet the strict requirements of Formula 1.

Optimism and challenges

Stefano Domenicali expressed optimism about the plans and the possibility of adding Thailand to the Formula 1 calendar. The current racing calendar already includes 24 events worldwide, including four in the Asia-Pacific region. But there are challenges that need to be overcome: the dense development and traffic in Bangkok, as well as the necessary investments, pose significant challenges. However, Thailand has experience with international motorsport events, such as the Chang International Circuit in Buriram, which is an FIA-certified circuit.

The path to Formula 1 could place Thailand among a number of major sporting events that not only attract millions of spectators but also have a significant economic impact. Motorsport events are considered economic heavyweights with global appeal because they can generate millions in sales through infrastructure expansion, tourism and sponsorship contracts. In fact, Formula 1 attracts millions of viewers worldwide, and major races like the Monaco Grand Prix have an economic impact of up to $100 million.

Economic impact of motorsport

Formula 1 is not only the commercial flagship in international motorsport, but also acts as a testing ground for technological innovations and sustainable mobility. Given the global impact of the races, the impact on the economy and tourism in the host cities will be enormous. Motorsport events offer cities the opportunity to position themselves as international travel destinations and thus strengthen the regional economy.

With such an ambitious project, Thailand could be well on its way to becoming an integral part of the international motorsport landscape. While preparations continue to progress, it remains to be seen how the discussions and planning will develop and what concrete steps will be taken in the near future. Formula 1 could be offered new perspectives in another emerging market, which should please both fans and business people in Thailand.
